Shipwreck Island Waterpark — Raging Rapids Lazy River

Panama City Beach, FL
April 2025

Project Summary

Mid-January to first week of April 2025 project showcasing complete skillset. Resting on giant hill, 400+ foot long rapids with two large steep slides, huge curves and humps. Removed 1-foot thick wall foam originally coated in polyurea, up to 3 inches of granule rubber absolutely stuck to floor. Decks and walls rotting away with wood. Pool-like section with rock obstacles completely reframed and reshaped for safety and better flow. Extensive hump reshaping, removed fiberglass from giant slide at end dropping into wading pool. Beautiful decking material for lifeguards (no more splinters or hot feet), rebuilt decks supporting membrane. Rebuilt rotting wood wall with new lower-profile cinder block wall. Power tools used to cut rubber granule into sections and scraped/yanked every bit off. Solid concrete patchwork to fix holes previously covered with more rubber. Coping on both sides - tight membrane coping rarely done by others, mastered by this team. Place unrecognizable by completion.

Key Results

Project deliverables and measurable impact

10,000+ sq ft resurfaced along 400+ ft river

River widened ~1 ft for improved rider flow

Removed 1.3 tons of deteriorated rubber flooring

Delivered within full off-season construction window

Stabilized substrate; restored full, leak-free operation

Initial Conditions

Challenges and issues identified at project start

  • 400+ foot long rapids on giant hill
  • Two large steep slides
  • Plenty of huge curves and humps
  • Original foam on walls taking 1 foot of width
  • Foam coated in polyurea
  • Up to 3 inches thick granule rubber on floor and walls (absolutely stuck)
  • Rubber collecting algae and felt horrible on feet/knees
  • Decks and some walls rotting away with wood
  • Pool section with rock obstacles had poor flow and safety issues
  • Fiberglass on giant slide at end
  • Lifeguard decking caused splinters and hot feet
  • Rotting wood wall with high profile sticking out
  • Holes in concrete covered by rubber instead of properly fixed

Work Performed

Detailed sequence of work completed

  1. Removed all 1-foot thick foam from walls
  2. Removed polyurea coating
  3. Used power tools to cut rubber granule into sections
  4. Scraped and yanked every bit of rubber off walls, humps, and floor
  5. Rebuilt rotting wood decks
  6. Reframed pool section with rock obstacles
  7. Completely reshaped pool section for safer flow and rider experience
  8. Extensive reshaping of humps
  9. Removed fiberglass from giant slide at end
  10. Installed beautiful non-splinter, cool-surface decking for lifeguards
  11. Rebuilt decks that support membrane
  12. Demolished rotting wood wall
  13. Built new lower-profile cinder block wall
  14. Solid concrete patchwork on holes (proper repair vs rubber covering)
  15. Installed tight membrane coping on both sides
  16. Complete membrane installation throughout

Outcomes & Results

Project deliverables and impact

  • Place unrecognizable by completion

  • Algae-free, comfortable surface
  • Safe, improved flow in pool section
  • Lifeguard decks safe and comfortable
  • Structural wood issues permanently solved with cinder block
  • All concrete properly repaired instead of hidden
  • Tight membrane coping mastery demonstrated
  • Waterpark posted updated photos on website showing work
