Big Kahuna's Lazy River — Emergency Staircase Membrane Repair (Two-Phase) - commercial aquatic construction by Torwyn Solutions

Big Kahuna's Lazy River — Emergency Staircase Membrane Repair (Two-Phase)

Destin, FL
March 2025

Project Summary

Two-part emergency repair (June 2024 and March 2025) of membrane staircase system on lazy river. Large concrete slab with 2 slides above staircase held overflow water causing immense water pressure beneath slab. Pressure caused membrane lining river to bulge dangerously, making it unsafe and unusable. Emergency repair during peak season required working while river was full, blocking off and semi-sealing staircase under water while maintaining low profile for thousands of daily guests. Created water pressure equalization system to keep steps and demarcation tight and secure until off-season. Permanent repair after season installed one-way valves and beefy fastener system, then relined stairs for Summer 2025 operation.

Initial Conditions

Challenges and issues identified at project start

  • Large concrete slab with 2 slides holding massive overflow water
  • Immense water pressure seeping under concrete slab
  • Water pressure causing membrane to bulge out insanely
  • Staircase unsafe and unusable due to membrane bulging
  • Risk of entire large membrane river system becoming compromised
  • Water also pouring into road in front of park

Work Performed

Detailed sequence of work completed

  1. Emergency assessment during peak season with river full
  2. Blocked off and semi-sealed staircase (normally underwater)
  3. Constant water pumping while maintaining guest operations
  4. Created water pressure equalization system
  5. Secured steps and demarcation tight to concrete shell
  6. Permanent one-way valve installation (post-season)
  7. Installed beefy under-surface fastener system
  8. Complete staircase relining with new membrane for Summer 2025
