The Newberry — Rooftop Pool Repair & VGBA Compliance

New York, NY
November 2022

Project Summary

November 2022 rooftop pool repair addressing bubbles near main drain and tile line caused by improper installation by big-name contractor who glued entire system to metal shell without proper sealing or terminations. Worked with engineer, superintendent, and building board representative to solve brass equalizer fittings, stainless main drain on cold steel shell, missing base padding for staircase, and tile line separation. Created watertight fitting system through bottom floor below shell, cut and prepped tile line, welded PVC sheet buffer pad for steps, and properly waterproofed main drain. Made pool VGBA compliant. Tested shell for corrosion through gel coat for engineer.

Initial Conditions

Challenges and issues identified at project start

  • Small bubbles appearing near main drain and tile line
  • Previous contractor glued entire system to metal shell improperly
  • No sealing around fittings or proper terminations
  • No termination below tile line, at skimmers, equalizers, or main drain
  • Brass equalizer fittings on cold steel shell
  • Stainless main drain improperly installed
  • No base padding for set-in staircase
  • Separation below tile line
  • Pool not VGBA compliant

Work Performed

Detailed sequence of work completed

  1. Walked engineer, superintendent, and building board through all issues
  2. Drilled out old brass fittings
  3. Created watertight fitting system installed through bottom floor below shell
  4. Engineered fittings to handle pressure and achieve VGBA compliance
  5. Cut bottom of old tile line
  6. Prepped and fixed weak tile line sections
  7. Welded large PVC sheet to shell as buffer pad for steps
  8. Covered buffer pad with membrane
  9. Properly waterproofed main drain by replacing part of glued liner
  10. Tested shell for corrosion through gel coat at various locations for engineer
  11. Received engineer approval for all solutions
